    Charles Stross

That's right--He is really coming here. A member of the Glasgow SF Writer's circle--(This group seems similar to the Inklings of Lewis and Tolkien fame)--who writes a Scottish brogue into his smartly conceived, futuristic novels. This is the Science Fiction/Fantasy author supreme who I have been amazed by and recommending to everyone.  Intelligently written books with artfully placed words, creative, full novels with a touch of clever humor.  This class act makes me excited to read 21st Century fiction that portrays a believably fascinating future.

    MYSTERY  AND IMAGINATION

Fine Books for Readers and Collectors

    November 11, 2006

    Hello Bookfriends,

    Tomorrow---

Saturday, November 11 from 2-4 pm:
Bruce Kimmel--actor, screenwriter of THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL--will be offering a dramatic, humorous reading from his new short story collection: HOW TO WRITE A DIRTY BOOK.  The dust jacket art on this is big and bold--a beautiful, sexy, bad-dame with a hardboiled guy looking-on in a marvelous color, vintage-pulp style.  Really eye-catching!  Hardcover.  First edition.  $26.00.

The author/ham, (and his readings truly are entertaining) has garnered some wonderful reviews for his new book.  All but one of the stories in this collection are set in Los Angeles, and drawn from a nostalgia for the rich multi-cultural, Hollywood-influenced characters of the city's past---and present.

    "An exquisite read!"--Charles Pogue.

Kimmel's most recent film credit is as a writer and director for the acclaimed thriller DECEIT, now available on DVD.

Please join us for delicious delectables, and a real fine time.

Thursday, November 16 from 8-9 pm:

Barbara Hambly--multi-award-winning, multi-genre veteran author of the historical dark-side--will be giving a talk and signing her new novel:
RENFIELD: Slave of Dracula.  Hardcover.  First edition.  $23.95

The most enigmatic character to stalk the shadows of DRACULA here takes center stage in Hambly's ingenious re-imagining of Stoker's classic tale.  Told from the point of view of Reinfield himself, Hambly explores the chilling circumstances of his madness, his immortal devotion to the Vampire Prince, and the mortal fear that feeds his need for revenge.

Ms. Hambly, a master of historical fiction, brings her expertise, and fascinating detail to this eerily realistic, full-bodied novel.

    Sunday, November 19 from Noon-2pm

    THREE DAYS TO NEVER

"Powers has long been one of my absolutely favorite writers, those whose new books I snatch up as soon as they appear, and THREE DAYS TO NEVER puts on display all the qualities I most admire in him: intelligence, narrative sparkle, great dialogue, speculative imagination, and emotional power. This is a wonderful novel."-Peter Straub.

"With its exuberant genre scrambling, to say nothing of its philosophical hijinks, low-jinks and nether-jinks, it's a postmodern work par excellence that will have you counting the days -- far more than three, alas -- until the next Tim Powers valentine appears.

    Michael Cadnum
will be reading from and signing CAN'T CATCH ME: And Other Twice-told Tales.  A trade paperbound original published by the quality small press--Tachyon.  First edition.  $14.95.

This unique short story collection by the multi-award winning, multi-genre author is an absolute treat.  Cleverly conceived short stories that will have multi-generational appeal.  Your children will also delight in hearing these tales read.  They simply won't know there are several levels of meaning--and edgy humor--between, on, and playfully laced through the lines.  Familiar characters and pieces from mythology, fairy and folktales are woven into new stories.  My favorite was a story with Medusa, an innocent girl who finds some satisfying revenge as a cursed woman.  Come for yourself and/or bring your kids for an unusual afternoon reading, chat and signing.

A varied selection, in hardcover and paperback, used and new, of children's books, juveniles, adult horror, adult thrillers, adult vampire fiction, and adult fantasy are available at the bookshop. (I particularly enjoy Cadnum's Algernon Blackwood-like, dark, evocative and haunting novels, so ask me if you have an interest).  Three of the titles for young people are listed for pre-order below:

    September 23 from 2-4pm:

Tim Powers will be giving a talk about and signing his new novel THREE DAYS TO NEVER.  Hardcover.  First edition.  (And yes, we do have the first printings, even though it is now in reprints and the publisher has been out of first printings for three weeks).

Wow, Powers just knocks me over with his pen, again.  It was an insatiable read--until the end, of course.  I simply HAD to keep going back for more.  As usual with Powers, this novel is hard to categorize.   Main stream reading groups would find it appealing, and have more than plenty of thoughts for discussion sessions.  Powers is uniquely creative (Philip K. Dick was his teacher and friend), but he makes his ideas seem soundly feasible, using many real historical and scientific facts.  Einstein's time and space machine, and how to obtain and use it, is the driving force for the suspenseful plot.  Various international political and religious factions who want the machine for their own strongly desired purposes add a (Three Days of the Condor-like) sophisticated intrigue to the pace and the depth of story.  An ordinary single father and his twelve-year-old daughter endear themselves to the reader as they and the reader take a wild dark fantasy ride--slow enough to lay out an assortment of philosophical questions about life, relationships, science, politics, and the future--yet fast-paced enough to feel an impatience to turn the next page.

LAST CALL.  Trade paperback.  Reprint.  $15.95.  World Fantasy Award-winner.  A poker-playing expert discovers the dark magic of his bloodline, and plays cards for his life, and his loved ones.  Set in California and Nevada.  Beautiful prose and metaphors.

THE ANUBIS GATES.  Trade paperback.  Reprint.  $13.95.  A Powers time-travel classic.  Dark and delicious.

DECLARE.  Mass-market paperback.  Reprint.  $7.99.  A double agent from Nazi-occupied Paris finds himself back in the thick of the cold war two decades later, in 1963.  A full novel of intrigue.

    NEWSLETTER: July 18, 2006

    Hello Bookfolks,

We have been putting out an incredible amount of books in the store---too many to keep up with and catalogue for the website. So, come visit us and check it out--or phone or email us to see if we have a favorite author you're looking for.
At the end of this letter I will mention a few of the new arrivals.

This Thursday, July 20 from 7ish to 9:30ish:
(Just come to listen or participate--all are invited, writers and readers alike!)

Award-winning author Dennis Etchison will be holding a very special writing class session. It will be filmed as part of a documentary on Charles Beaumont and will focus on the life and writing of Beaumont. Mr. Beaumont was a major writer for the Twilight Zone, an incredible author and a screenplay writer. (Malcolm and I just watched one of Beaumont's early films, THE INTRUDER, in which Beaumont wrote the script and played the part of the school principal. A powerful piece of filmmaking). In his early days, Dennis was one of Beaumont’s students and the format of his own present-day writing class was inspired from these early Beaumont classes. There will be guest speakers (booked so far: George Clayton Johnson) and it should be a delightful evening of writing, memories, and fun. It’s an evening everyone should enjoy, writers or not, so bring your friends, bring your family, and let’s ha
