1 Grillparzer, Franz SAPPHO: A Tragedy in Five Acts
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1876. First U.S. edition thus. In the translation with prefaces by Ellen Frothingham. Former owner's discreet stamp and 1877-dated signature to flyleaf. Hardcover. Small area of abrasion (sticker removal) to front pastedown, offsetting to first page of text and copyright page (from a clipping that had been laid in), else a bright, near fine copy in green cloth, decorated in black, lettered in gilt; no dust jacket.
Second play by the important Austrian author and his first in what would become his verse form of choice, iambic pentameter. His works are notable for their "vigorous gestural language--the ideal of 'word and image working together."'--W.E. Yates.

2 Schnitzler, Arthur RHAPSODY: A Dream Novel
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1927. First U.S. edition. English translation by Otto P. Schinnerer. Hardcover. Neatly repaired tear to page 95/96, a bit of fading to gilt spine lettering, else fine; in an age-darkened dust jacket that shows minor chips to spine ends and interior, separation at spine folds and front flap. Superb example of a scarce issue.
The quintessentially Viennese author explores the "borderland between illusion and reality" (NY Times) in a "succession of exquisitely conceived and dramatically contrasted scenes."--Saturday Review. Source for Kubrick's final film, EYES WIDE SHUT.
