Crowell Company, (1963). First edition thus: advance reading copy. Hardcover. A near fine copy in illustrated stapled wraps; in wraparound illustrated dust jacket which has been affixed at the spine by the publisher; the jacket shows minor wear to the edges, a tiny snag to the spine, and mild age-toning to the rear cover. 
Cooney, who won the Caldecott Medal for CHANTICLEER AND THE FOX in 1958, has taken Jewett's classic 1886 story of a little girl whose only friend is a cow, and enhanced it with dozens of delicate, evocative illustrations in color and black-and-white.
