(Los Angeles): TamTam Books, 1998. 096623460X / 9780966234602 First edition thus. Originally released in 1946 as by Vernon Sullivan, an American author Vian invented, and then ''translated'' by Vian into French Fine in illustrated wraps: a trade papeback. Vian was a French novelist, playwright, jazz critic, and translator of Chandler, Cain, and Bradbury, who died at the age of 39 while watching a preview of the 1959 Michel Gast-directed film adaptation.
This tragi-noir about a black American avenging his brother's lynching, found the "rage and pain which Vian (almost alone) was able to hear in the black American musicians, in the bars, dives, and cellars, of the Paris of those years."--James Baldwin.
