The imporant novelist, author of THE GOOD SOLDIER, also published several books of fairy tales, from which this tale of young Queen Eldrida and her only friend, a bat, has been drawn. Black-and-white illustrations in a faux na´ve style by Grambs Miller.

This is number 5. Hardcover. Very fine, bound in brick-red cloth with paper spine label, colored endsheets, in illustrated wood veneer dust wrapper, housed in a matching cloth-covered hinged traycase with printed spine label. A thoughtful, exquisitely rendered production, as usual. 
Sladek draws upon THE GOLDEN BOUGH, Norse mythology and Shirer's account of Buchenwald for his unique spin on Grimm's Hansel and Gretel. Gorgeous and apposite monochrome illustrations by King-Rieniets decorate the text and the jacket.
