Knopf, 1949. First edition. Hardcover. A near fine in brown cloth with gilt titles and decorations to the spine; in an illustrated dust jacket with slight age-toning to the spine and perimeters, and small nicks to the head and heel of the spine. An attractive copy of his first book. 
Set in the aftermath of war, these interconnected stories by the noted reporter on Southeast Asia and correspondent for THE NEW YORKER portray lost men tempted into various underworlds of several "forgotten corners of the Orient."

A first-hand account of the Vietnam War by a correspondent for THE NEW YORKER, whose first volume on Vietnam, THE LOST REVOLUTION, was nominated for the National Book Award.
