New York: Atheneum, 1962. First edition with first state dust jacket (blurb names on rear panel are printed in pale green.) Jacket design by Janet Halverson. Hardcover. A few tiny dots of foxing to the fore-edge and to a preliminary page, else very nearly fine in terra cotta cloth; in an age-toned (particularly to spine panel) dust jacket that also shows a whisper of edgewear. 
The North Carolinian's debut won the William Faulkner Award for a notable first novel and presaged a long and distinguished career as a novelist, poet, essayist, and playwright. His novel KATE VAIDEN won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1986.

SIGNED and dated (1992) by the author to the front free endpaper. Ninth novel by the winner of numerous literary awards including the Book Critics Circle Award and the William Faulkner Award.
