Showcases the two detectives created by the idiosyncratic author of THE PURPLE CLOUD. PRINCE ZALESKI was Shiel's debut book, and the three exploits of Cummings King Monk are drawn from his 1911 PALE APE collection.

Precedes the U.K. edition. Hardcover. Very good only: with minor soiling to covers, substantial discoloration to spine, offsetting to endsheets, owner's name to endsheet; in a fair dust jacket, missing the rear panel, but with pictorial front and spine panels worn but bright and clean. 
"A murder mystery of 'almost cryptic' style and 'unexpected and ingenious' compactness of plot"--Alan Gullette, derived from Morse. The flap describes the principal character Prince Surazal (Lazarus spelt backwards) as having lived for twenty centuries!

Scientific romance featuring Hannibal Lepsius, who is sired by his father--an archaeologist, to live a monastic and scholarly life and learn to decipher an ancient stone's writings. Alas, Hannibal is soon distracted by the lure of women and the world.

Werner Laurie's Colonial Library, with copyright statement within a box on title-page. Hardcover. Very good: Endsheets browned and mildly foxed, corner tips bumped, tear to the crown of the spine, stains to the rear cover, minor wear to the shelf edges, and rubbing to the decorative covers with "Colonial Edition" to the front cover and spine. 
Scarce first edition of "the first written and the last published of three loosely connected future stories, THE LAST MIRACLE, THE LORD OF THE SEA and THE PURPLE CLOUD...I find it original, nicely written, and with good character studies."--Bleiler.

Final sf novel by the author of THE PURPLE CLOUD is a tale of an interstellar visit and multiple-sex aliens, "..much more sophisticated and imaginative than contemporary genre sf...told in the decorated style of its author's youth."--Clute and Nicholls.
