Jacket design by Jay Y. Smith. 
Third of Stewart's "A Staircase in Surrey" quintet of novels chronicling life at Oxford. Numerous characters from the first two books, THE GAUDY and YOUNG PATULLO, reappear. Stewart wrote detective stories under the pseudonym "Michael Innes."

Innes was the pseudonym for John Innes Mackintosh Stewart who wrote some fifty mystery novels. This is his autobiography detailing his life as writer and professor. Innes' most popular characters were detective John Appleby and painter Honeybath.
