New York and London: Frederick A. Stokes Company Publishers, (1895). First U.S. edition. In green cloth debossed in silver with titles and racetrack device set into skull&crossbones cartouche; fore-edge untrimmed. Hardcover. Very good, with wear and soiling to covers, front inner hinge at frontispiece a bit tender; no dust jacket. Illustrations by Frank M. Gregory reproduced as black-and-white plates on coated stock inserts. 
Early Hubin-listed mystery with a race-track setting. Hervey also authored DAVID DIMSDALE, M.D., A Story of Past and Future, an sf title listed in Clute. The frontispiece depicts: "the Spaniard endeavoring to crawl toward the stiletto."!
