2 Genet, Jean THE BALCONY
New York: Grove Press Inc., (1958). First U.S. edition. Translated by Bernard Frechtman. Hardcover. Pale offsetting to the endsheets, a few tiny dots of black stain to the upper edges of the endsheets, else this is a bright, near fine copy in gilt-stamped grey cloth; in a mildly age-toned, very lightly rubbed illustrated dust jacket.
Lovely copy of this avant garde bellwether which had its Obie-winning American premiere at Lucille Lortel's fabled Theatre de Lys in 1960. Genet's work exerted a powerfully influential effect on the off-Broadway movement in Manhattan in the sixties.
