In CE's smartly produced series of stories, each with stylish, well-designed typography and original, appealing jacket art. Hardcover. Fine, as-new, in full navy blue cloth with blind-embossed vignette to front cover, gilt lettering to spine; in a fine, as-new, illustrated dust jacket. Book design by Rita Marshall. Jacket illustration by Etienne Delessert. 
When an old man lets a dryad out of her tree, she rewards him by making him thirty years younger and capable of once again coaxing the animals down off the mountain with pipe playing.

New York: The Century Co., 1891. First edition, later printing. In pale green cloth with darker green stamping, no squirrel to front cover cartouche. Bal 18906: Binding state C. Hardcover. Very good, with light wear and soiling, cloth beginning to split at lower front fore-edge; no dust jacket. Illustrated by A.B. Frost. 
Stockton--author of RUDDER GRANGE and "The Lady of the Tiger?"--was one of the most popular authors of his day. This comic novel, showcasing Stockton's typical warmth and whimsy, was originally serialized in the Century magazine.
