1 Ellson, Hal SUMMER STREET
New York: Ballantine Books, (1953). B000EAPTLG First edition, first printing. Hardcover issue of a novel published by Ballantine simultaneously in hard and softcover. Hardcover. Bookplate to pastedown, else fine, in tan composition binding with blue spine lettering; lacking the dust jacket.
One of Ellson's better-known novels tells of "a sixteen-year-old male animal...his whole body stirring to baffling yearnings, and his mind at times roaring with a confusion of new and startling ideas and daydreams...a being not child and yet not man."

2 Ellson, Hal THE GOLDEN SPIKE
(New York): Ballantine Books, (1952). First edition. One of the scarce Ballantine hardcovers released simultaneously with paperback editions. Hardcover. Very good: text block tanned, pastedowns show glue residue and scarring; in a lightly rubbed and edgeworn price-clipped dust jacket with front flap rumpled and scarred; the jacket has been trimmed about 1/4'', but the cover art is largely unaffected.
Cautionary tale of adolescent drug addiction from the therapist/author who created a vogue for juvenile-delinquent fiction. The vivid vintage wraparound painting by Maguire features a montage of the sordid, menacing, twilight world of a teen-age junkie.
