In terra cotta cloth with lettering in gilt, illustrations in gilt (cactus) and black (mountains and campfire). Hardcover. Very good: shaken, bookplate to pastedown, owner's bold, 1889-dated signature to flyleaf, wear to extremities, mild spine slant, dots of stain and fading to spine, soiling to a few pages. Charming b&w tissue-guarded frontis and chapter heads.
Neglected California yarn by the author of REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM. Though born in Maine, Wiggin and her family moved to California--where she established the first kindergarten west of the Rockies. The canyon is Las Flores, north of Santa Monica.
