London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1960). First edition. Hardcover. Previous owner's tiny signature to front free endsheet, crisscross of tape ghosts to both free endsheets, else an about near fine copy; in a mildly age-toned, lightly rubbed pictorial dust jacket which shows a faint crease to the upper spine panel. 
Novel set in Victorian New Zealand about an illegitimate servant girl who reluctantly marries the most eligible man in Wellington and goes to live with him in dangerous Maori country. This copy neatly SIGNED by the author to the title-page.
