Reprinted from Ticknor, Reed & Field's edition of De Quincey's LETTERS TO A YOUNG MAN AND OTHER PAPERS, published at Boston in 1854. The fold-out contrasts an English "Gold Field" (with flora providing the "gold") to the chaos of the American "diggins."
