1 Collier, John DEFY THE FOUL FIEND: The Misadventures of a Heart
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First U.S. edition. Hardcover. Near fine in maroon-lettered and decorated dun-colored cloth, with maroon top-edge stain; in price-clipped dust jacket with a number of short closed edge tears, moderate chipping at the spine ends, nicking, and age-darkening, especially to spine panel.
Collier applies his wonted subversive wit and lapidary prose style to this almost eighteenth century coming-of-age tale of the illegitimate son of a dissolute and bankrupt peer. Not fantasy, but richly rewarding and hugely diverting.
