Buchan, John; Gorey, Edward, illustrator THE THIRTY-NINE STEPS Franklin Center, Pennsylvania: The Franklin Library, (1988). First edition thus: Deluxe edition, in the Franklin Library of Mystery Masterpieces; no dust jacket, as issued. Fine, bound in gilt-decorated black leatherette with inset black-and-white paste-on illustration by Edward Gorey, spine hubbed, all edges gilt. Gorey did the endpapers and interior artwork, as well, originally used in a 1967 German edition. Richard Hannay makes his debut in this splendid early spy yarn, the basis for one of Hitchcock's best films, with Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll unforgettably handcuffed to one another, and Peggy Ashcroft quietly moving in a small but central role.
