Dutton & Co., Inc., 1955. First edition: Review copy, with publisher's slip laid in. Hardcover. Tiny crimp to spine head, else a bright, fine copy in brown over yellow cloth, with printed spine label; in a somewhat edgeworn, lightly age-toned photo-pictorial dust jacket. With 25 illustrations, including photo-frontis portrait of Sloan. 246 pages. 
Biography of the influential American artist perhaps best known as a member of "The Eight" who painted the street life of New York City. Brooks and Sloan were friends, and Sloan's widow granted access to the artist's diaries and personal papers.

Second volume in Brooks remarkable Literary History of America focusing on post-Civil War New England as reflected in the lives and letters of the major and minor participants. The recipient of this volume, Stuart Chevalier, was a distinguished lawyer.
