1 Barr, Robert THE TRIUMPHS OF EUGENE VALMONT
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1906. First U.S. edition. Illustrated with eight b&w plates printed on coated stock. Hardcover. Near fine with a very slight spine lean, traces of wear to the edges and to the terrific marmalade-yellow-brown decorated binding: front cover displays a top-hatted, gloved, cane-bearing Valmont with smoke rising from his cigarette; no dust jacket.
Queen's Quorum choice distinguished by--in Howard Haycraft's words--"the first humorous detective of any standing." Haycraft goes on to say that Christie's Poirot bears a resemblance to the pompously Gallic Valmont "that seems more than accidental."
