London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., (1923). B000GS308U First edition, first printing. "Presentation copy" blind-embossed to the title-page. Hardcover. Near fine in pale green cloth with titles and front cover border embossed in black; in a worn original dust jacket that has separated at the spine--but remains intact. The jacket is 90% present with chipping, tears, and considerable wear to the edges. 
The story takes place in 1919-1920 and deals with the final year in the life of its main character, Henry Earlforward, a miser, who keeps a second hand bookshop in the Clerkenwell area of London. Quite scarce in dust jacket.
