1 Thirkell, Angela MARLING HALL
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942. First U.S. edition, first printing. Hardcover. Very nearly fine, in russet cloth with gilt lettering and devices; in a nearly fine illustrated dust jacket that shows some minor darkening and light wear. Jacket drawing by Rudolph Ruzicka.
A Barsetshire Novel. WWII-era tale of love and the home front set in Thirkell's invented county--peopled as usual with appealing eccentrics, charming bohemians, the wise, the witty and the befuddled--in about equal measures. Delicious.

World War II has an impact on the lives and loves of the residents of Thirkell's Northbridge. "As everyone knows Northbridge High Street there is no need to describe it, so we will proceed to do so."--the opening lines.

Family threads intertwine as a widow and her sister-in-law settle in Barsetshire, Thirkell's self-described Cloud Cuckooland and the quintessential English county--which Trollope invented and Thirkell borrowed and made indelibly her own.

6 Thirkell, Angela THE DUKE'S DAUGHTER
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1951. First U.S. edition. Burgundy cloth with gilt titles, devices and rules to the spine; publisher's blind-embossed devices to the front and rear cover. Hardcover. Former owner's name to the first blank leaf, else near fine; in an illustrated dust jacket that displays nicks to the spine ends and flap folds, a tiny closed tear to the front flap fold, mild age-toning to the spine, and light soiling.
The front endpapers show a map of the fictional county of Barsetshire, England where Thirkell's enclave of eccentric characters live and love. This novel features the Harveys, Tom Grantly, Marigold and Sir Cecil Waring--who courts the Duke's daughter.
