1 Theroux, Alexander DARCONVILLE'S CAT
Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1981. First edition, second state, with page following Chapter 72 a solid rectangle, rather than a checkerboard as in the first issue. Hardcover. Very good plus in a rubbed, age-toned and spine-darkened pictorial dust jacket that shows a very short closed edge tear to the upper front panel. The portrait of the title character on the jacket was painted by the author.
The Sterne-like black rectangle at page 483 (which had appeared as a checkerboard in the first printing) was reportedly corrected at Theroux's request in this scarce second issue. Widely regarded as Theroux's best novel. Burgess 99.

2 Theroux, Alexander DARCONVILLE'S CAT
New York: Henry Holt and Company/An Owl Book, (1996). 0805043659 / 9780805043655 First edition thus: first Owl Book edition, a trade paperback. Trade Paperback. Tight, clean and nearly fine--a hint of rubbing to the shelf-edges, and a touch of age-toning to the pages edges--in wraps with evocative cover art by John Candell depicting a cat and a face lost in deep thought.
This highly regarded, elusive, novel won numerous literary accolades and was selected for the Burgess 99 best novels list. Young professor Darconville falls in love with a student, from there Theroux moves into 'tensions between life and art'.
