New York: Ballantine Books, (1953). First edition. Hardcover. A fine copy in grey boards lettered in yellow to the spine; in an illustrated dust jacket with very minor nicking to the spine ends and flap folds and one almost invisible short closed tear to the lower front panel.

15102 [Peter, Ellis]. Pargeter, Edith BY THIS STRANGE FIRE
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, (1948). First U.S. edition of British title: BY FIRELIGHT. Hardcover. A better than very good plus copy in an age-toned pictorial dust jacket that shows some nicking, rubbing and edgewear; however, the evocative jacket painting by John O'Hara Cosgrove II is intact and still vivid.
Fascinating blend of historical fiction and contemporary character study as widowed author Claire Falchon retires to a house in a remote English hamlet and begins writing the story of its former owner--a man burned for witchcraft three centuries before.
