New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1937. First edition, first printing. Swanson Literary Agency copy, rubber-stamped to the endpapers and top and bottom page edges. Hardcover. Tiny nick to the crown of the spine, else a virtually fine copy in blue cloth, ruled and lettered in silver; in a silver-foil illustrated dust jacket with chipping and a few tears to the shelf edges. Jacket art features the New York City skyline. 
New York City society novel by the author primarily remembered for his story contributions to western film (FORT APACHE; SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON; etc.). This copy has been inscribed to his literary agent H.N. Swanson, and fully SIGNED by the author.

Last date on copyright page states: ''Reprinted October, 1934.'' Hardcover. Bright, crisp, very nearly fine copy in pale orange cloth with lettering and decorations stamped in blue, red top-edge coloring; in a price-clipped dust jacket with some mild edgewear and faint soiling, age-darkening to spine. A very nice copy! 
Haines's notable debut, filmed in 1937 from the novelist's screenplay, with Henry Fonda, Pat O'Brien, and Jane Wyman. Illustrated (endsheets, binding, jacket, chapter heads) by Robert Lawson. This copy SIGNED and dated by the author to the title-page.

This edition adds a note and glossary of American baseball terms by Malamud for the English readers. The classic baseball novel which draws an allegorical parallel between baseball and the quest for the Holy Grail. Filmed in 1984 with Robert Redford.

Enjoyable pulp fiction suggested by the career of Howard Hughes--here "Jonas Cord"; the character of Nevada Smith a William Boyd figure, Rina Marlowe "a composite of June Haver and Jean Harlow"--Brooker-Bowers. Source for the watered-down all-star film.
